Spreading is done by DCC - a file transfer mechanism used by IRC chat programs.

Threat description

IRC worms may contain any number of payloads. Specifically, since these are network-aware programs, the user may be at risk from unauthorized data access, and being used as a pawn in some Distributed Denial-of-Service scheme.
